Review of Kim’s collection in Rattle

Here’s, at least as far as I know, the first review of our very first title, Kim Calder’s Who’s to Say What’s Home.

It appears in Rattle and Kim is very happy with the review.

I like this passage best:

I found one of the best poems of the collection to be “emergency room,” in which the daughter has to face her father’s aging and eventual death. This is a universal issue that we all have to deal with, yet the poem doesn’t veer into triteness at all. Calder demonstrates a remarkable ability to portray real grief – which I find refreshing in the midst of the many poems in this collection that seem to try to drown grief out.

Check it out!

“History of Our Lives” – Kim Calder

History of Our Lives – by Kim Calder from Chiwan Choi on Vimeo.

This is Kim reading at Skylight Books on 4/3. It was a great night of supportive fans, book lovers, and poetry.

She read from her book, although only 1 poem from it (“sunstroke”), and also her ongoing epic masterpiece, “prison house.” To finish it off, she read two newer pieces, including the poem in the video above, “History of Our Lives.”

As some of you know, this was Kim’s final reading in Los Angeles before taking off for Prague (she got a writing fellowship – jealous!) and then, upon her return to the US, back to school for another Master’s.

The night was also meaningful for the people we met – Cati Porter, whose work I didn’t know before, but blew me away with her last two poems (the one about her dog having cancer just slayed me); Jade Shames who in charge of poetry at Skylight Books and is the one who booked the writers; and Noel Alumit.

We’ll post some more pictures in the coming days.

Please join us at Skylight Books tomorrow night as Kim Calder does her final reading before leaving Los Angeles for Prague!

We’re so excited to have a reading booked at Skylight. It is probably the major independent bookstore (along with Vroman’s in Pasadena) around Los Angeles. Which means, we need to make a GREAT SHOWING so we can have more events there in the future and sell our books there.

Kim will be reading with Cati Porter, poet and editor of Poemelon.

From Black & Tan @ Stories

Kim reading a couple of pieces from her book at Stories

It was a great turnout.

And the bookstore is beautiful. A cafe in the back. A back area with tables where people can smoke.

Karen Harryman, who was the other featured reader, was fantastic. She read from a YA novel she was working on. Check out her work.

Nice.

~ Press Editors ~

~ Writ Large News ~

WLP interviewed on BlogTalkRadio

Writ Large Press was interviewed by Stacey Mangiaracina and Roy Johnston of “Between the Sheets,” a show on BlogTalkRadio. They wanted to know what our process has been in launching a small literary press and we read some of the poems from Kim’s collection.

The two hosts were really great, generous and supportive, and we’re looking forward to speaking to them again.

Come on in! We’re open!

Okay. It’s a bit rough around the edges, but we have finally opened our (virtual) bookstore.

Here’s the entrance. Come on in.

Once inside, you will see our entire catalog of books. Don’t freak out when you see only one title in this catalog, because we all know that it’s going to grow into something incredible.

We have the Proof

It’s here. It’s beautiful. And we’re excited as all freakin’ hell. Yesterday, we received the proof copy of Who’s to Say What’s Home from Lightning Source.

We spent a good amount of time going through the pages, checking for errors, and mostly staring at it from all angles. To paraphrase our dear friend Michelle in New York, it is beautiful and perfect. (Okay, there was one slightly misaligned page that we instantly corrected, but still perfect!)

LAUNCH DATE SET – Friday 5/2!!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Friday, May 2nd, 7 pm on. The Writ Large Press Launch. Kim Calder book release.

We just talked to a manager at La Cita and he says it’s a go. We’re going to have our launch and release party there on May 2nd. So mark your calendars and plan on joining us.

They’re letting us have the back patio of the bar at no cost, other than all the booze that people will be buying and drinking, on a Friday night. It will start at 7 and we’ll start wrapping up around 10′ish.
