The Last Chapbooks Project @ The Last Bookstore

I haven’t had time to post here for a while, which means, among other things, I haven’t mentioned anything about a news exciting project we started working on. I promise I’ll write more in-depth about The Last Chapbooks Project in a few days.

A quick summary: a very cool recently opened used bookstore called The Last Bookstore, on 4th & Main in downtown Los Angeles (at the old Old Bank DVD spot), offered us some shelf space to curate with chapbooks from local writers. Well, as of today, Thursday 3/11/10, the shelf is open, just in time for this month’s Downtown Art Walk! So drop in, if not tonight, sometime soon.

The shelf will always hold chapbooks from 20 authors. Most often than not, there will be 3 copies of each book. We will regularly rotate the authors and books.

We will begin a monthly reading series, most likely in April.

It will all be a blast!

So, without further delay, here is the list of the 20 initial authors/books:

  • Christina Kerr – Stumbling Out Loud
  • Margie Goodspeed – Shovel and Pail
  • Susan Vorhand – Pouring Ribbons
  • Elya Braden – The Journey Home
  • Barbara Greene Rusin – Free Range
  • Justin Klippel – Squid Ink
  • John M. FitzGerald – The Mind
  • Pat Lucas – The Mistress
  • Mary Thornton-Brown – The People in the Sky
  • Bruce Arnold – Tide Pools in Lava
  • Robert Carroll – B+
  • Chiwan Choi – cancer
  • Alejandro Escudé – Unknown Physics
  • Paul Cummins – From the Shadows: Poems from 2009
  • James Berry – Monk’s Room
  • G. Murray Thomas – Songs of Inappropriate Desire
  • Carrie Kirshman – Grey
  • Veryle Rupp – Inside Snowfence
  • Alice Hayward – Breathing in the Depths

Also, a few local anthologies:

  • Wednesday #1.2 “Alchemy”
  • MO+TH #5
  • Twelve Los Angeles Poets – an ONTHEBUS Series

Thank you writers who have sent me your books. They are beautiful in the bookstore.

I hope all of you will continue to support our local writers and places like The Last Bookstore that are too few and far between.

Thank you all for a succesful party for Aaron’s book launch!

Thank you all for showing up to the party on Saturday night at the Writing Pad. Thank God they have such an amazing (and gigantic) space because it was packed.

Flickr is down so I’m not able to post all the pics, but here’s one.

And for those who couldn’t make it, and the ones who came but couldn’t buy a copy at the party, the book is available here for purchase.

Thank you to Marilyn Friedman for hosting the party. Thank you friends, family, and lover of books again for your continuing support.

Books have been ordered. Yes.

This morning, Lightning Source approved of the changes in our proof, which means that we were finally able to order our books!

It’s a 5-day turnaround, so still good for the release party in honor of Aaron’s book, but just to make double sure, we put on a rush job order.

The postcards we ordered should be here by tomorrow (was hoping for today). Once I have those in my hands, I’ll be footing around downtown passing them out.

All in all, almost time to breathe. Almost. Need to see those boxes of books here. Then breathe.

Also, we got a Press Release written up and sent out. Hate writing those. I don’t know why. Something about it creeps me out. But part of the business.

SEE YOU AT THE PARTY!!

Final Corrections (for real this time)

We got our proof copy of Aaron’s book on Friday.

The hope is, with each proofreading session, every error will be caught. Um…no.

It’s like they multiply while you’re not looking. Those stray commas. Them extra spaces. Those O’s mistaken for o’s.

Anyway, caught all of ‘em this time for sure! I swear! And back to the printer. Ready to order the 250 copies for the PARTY!!

Come to the party and you’ll see how perfect the book is.

~ Writ Large News ~

WLP interviewed on BlogTalkRadio

Writ Large Press was interviewed by Stacey Mangiaracina and Roy Johnston of “Between the Sheets,” a show on BlogTalkRadio. They wanted to know what our process has been in launching a small literary press and we read some of the poems from Kim’s collection.

The two hosts were really great, generous and supportive, and we’re looking forward to speaking to them again.

Come on in! We’re open!

Okay. It’s a bit rough around the edges, but we have finally opened our (virtual) bookstore.

Here’s the entrance. Come on in.

Once inside, you will see our entire catalog of books. Don’t freak out when you see only one title in this catalog, because we all know that it’s going to grow into something incredible.

We have the Proof

It’s here. It’s beautiful. And we’re excited as all freakin’ hell. Yesterday, we received the proof copy of Who’s to Say What’s Home from Lightning Source.

We spent a good amount of time going through the pages, checking for errors, and mostly staring at it from all angles. To paraphrase our dear friend Michelle in New York, it is beautiful and perfect. (Okay, there was one slightly misaligned page that we instantly corrected, but still perfect!)

LAUNCH DATE SET – Friday 5/2!!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Friday, May 2nd, 7 pm on. The Writ Large Press Launch. Kim Calder book release.

We just talked to a manager at La Cita and he says it’s a go. We’re going to have our launch and release party there on May 2nd. So mark your calendars and plan on joining us.

They’re letting us have the back patio of the bar at no cost, other than all the booze that people will be buying and drinking, on a Friday night. It will start at 7 and we’ll start wrapping up around 10′ish.
